DX Award :: The Process

The Process, designed by Juxt Interactive, is a powerful example of self-promotion online. The site was created to highlight the extraordinary design talents and strategies of Juxt, well-known in the marketplace for its work through the last year on such sites as LundstromARCH and PruLITE.  What sets the site apart is that it is a uniquely complete design experience, offering a real-world example of what “multimedia” is supposed to be. The Process is all-encompassing, going way beyond the usual straight-forward, visual experience. Juxt Interactive has managed to capture the viewer’s every sense, combining sound with motion graphics, making this a compelling, powerful design.

Former architect, Tom Purgason, who is the lead designer at Juxt Interactive, produced one of the best examples of self-promotional material yet found online. His use of an innovative window launch opening strategy is worth the entire trip. One window floats on top of the other, with the design fully integrated across both windows — the graphics of the top window combine with the visuals of the bottom one.

As with much of Juxt Interactive’s work, the line art, motion and white space dominates the design. Indeed, this is a reflection of Todd Purgason’s personal style and design sensibilities. It is a strategy derived from Purgason’s background as an architect. Yet his incredible command of sound and motion graphics demonstrate an extraordinary understanding of the interactive medium.

Graphics, music and sound are all perfectly timed with motion. There is not a single break between sounds, as page after page seamlessly flows. Timing and the musical score make for an unbeatable technological experience. It’s very harmonious and extraordinarily fluid. We found it virtually flawless.

The site’s theme is also unique, it deals with process and how our evolving world is in constant change — hence the name, “The Process”. The use of metamorphosis, a chrysalis transforming into a butterfly, brilliantly symbolizes our own process of change and how we reflect that change in technology every day.

The site’s carefully defined color palate, as well as the use of shading, texture and imagery combine to present a sophisticated look that gets to the point in a bold way. The result is that all of the site’s special effects (note the purposeful use of a movie term) flow effortlessly, creating drama and touching our emotions directly and in a lasting way.

On the technical front, the only downside is with the fact that FLASH requires a lengthy initial download. While at most sites, such download delays are usually a waste of time, however at this site Juxt combines a rarely used component of the FLASH technology with some sharp thinking. While you wait for the design to load, poetry scrolls across the screen, setting the mood and preparing visitors for what they are about to see. This is more than unusual — it is absolutely unique.

Visiting this site once will probably be enough for most viewers. The interactive display is awesome, however, it may become difficult for the less experienced to return to the home page once inside the “process”. On a visual note, the unique style of Juxt’s team may not appeal to all audiences and may not be appropriate for every product nor commercial venture. A few may not be able to imagine their business taking on this look and it will seem overwhelming to others.

Nonetheless, the unique style of Juxt clearly redefines design strategy online. Their direction will undoubtedly have a great impact on the work of many of other designers.

The achievement of this site is the complete integration of sound, technology, design, motion graphics, and emotion into a seamless, self-promotional presentation. Our virtual hat is off to Juxt Interactive for the imaginative manipulation of our senses. The bottom line here is that it just doesn’t get better than this.
